Essentially a high dose of birth control, it can stop any fertilized egg from implanting and thus stop pregnancy. However, like any other quick-fix, it has its dangerous and unexpected side-effects and thus be used minimally. Few of the side effects are:-
Since the pill interferes with the working of the hormones, it is not uncommon that females find themselves gaining weight unexpectedly after taking the pill. Often this may manifest itself as temporary and even out eventually but regular use can cause big problem.
In some women, the pill may cause the skin to become excessive dry and even develop rashes. In such scenario direct sunlight should be avoided and soothing skin lotions applied till the skin heals back to the normal self.
Post taking this emergency contraceptive, some women may face spotting or light bleeding outside their normal periods. In few selective women, this can change to significant bleeding and even a concerning change in their menstrual cycle. This should even out after a couple of periods but persistence of symptoms beyond it requires medical attention.

Mood Swings And Depression
In some women, the pills can cause extreme mood swings which can manifest itself within or after 48 hours of pill consumption. Losing control over emotions, they can find themselves amidst unexpected and uncontrollablesorrow and hopelessness. The feeling of depression is triggered by hormonal misbalance. Ideally it should fade once the hormonal balance has been restored but medical help might be required for persistent symptoms.
A regular use of these contraceptive pills can cause serious damage to reproductive organs and may make future pregnancy impossibility as well. They have been known to cause ovarian damage. In some women, it can cause tubal ectopic pregnancy which is equivalent to a surgical emergency.
Reduced Sexual Interest
In some women, the pill kills the sexual interest in women which can persist for about a couple of weeks.
Interactions With Other Drugs
The pill can react with various groups of medications like anticonvulsants, anti-tuberculosis, antibiotics, herbal preparations and others like Acetaminophen. Women who are on such medications must consult a doctor before taking the pill.
It can be concluded that the pill should only be resorted to once in a while as an emergency use with 24-48 hours of unprotected sex but never considered for regular or frequent use.
