What all you need to keep handy-

  1. Saree
  2. Blouse
  3. Petticoat
  4. Safety pins

Step 1:  (how to drape a cotton saree perfectly)

Wear the blouse, which will complement the saree, it is best to make one out of its blouse piece, if not, choose a complementary colour and material.

Step 2:  (how to wear a cotton saree neatly)

Sarees need a place to be tucked into which cannot be provided by leggings or pants, therefore it requires a special undergarment called petticoat. Tie this petticoat half an inch below your navel tightly but not too tight. The petticoat should be of a comfortable material and of the same colour as the body of the saree so that it is not visible from outside.

Step 3:  (tight saree draping)

Tuck the plain end of the saree on the right side just below the navel that is the one without embellishment and designed border into the petticoat and ensure that the saree is facing the right side that is the designs or embroidery is front faced.

Step 4:

With the lower end on the floor and the rest on your left, wrap it around yourself once and bring it to your right.

Step 5:

Hold your saree tight and make pleats of the size you wish to wear it is usually 5 inches or so but some prefer larger pleats while others, smaller. Whatever be the size, ensure they are all of the same size. Take all of them together hold it from the top and if someone is there ask them to check if they are in equal level from the bottom keeping in mind the kind of shoe you are wearing, if it is flat make it low and if it is high keep the pleat level low because the heel would cause it to go up. Once the level is okay, tuck it in and ensure it looks plain and not bloated and that the saree is still open to your left.

Step 6:

With the remaining clothing on your left, drape it around and bring it to your right hand side, round the hips to your front covering the chest and throw it on your back like draping a scarf. This part called the “anchal” or “pallu” can be secured using safety pin to pin it with your blouse. You can also pleat the anchal up for a more formal look.
